When this photo was taken, none of us—my grandfather, my father, and especially me—would have imagined that this little girl would one day grow up to be the fourth generation—and the first daughter—to head the family construction business.

Running C.B. Strain & Son taught me the importance of good jobs that pay a living wage. I worked hard to make sure that as the company thrived, our employees, suppliers, and subcontractors did, too.

In the construction business, a variety of stakeholders must come together to get the job done. I take pride in my ability to prioritize the job and work with everyone as a team to reach a shared goal.
Running for office wasn’t ever part of my plan. But when I saw that government was going in the wrong direction, I could no longer stand on the sidelines.

In 2018, I ran against then two-term incumbent GOP Senator Sue Serino, losing by just 688 votes. It never felt like a loss—simply unfinished business.

I am running in 2020 because the pandemic has made it clear that the 41st Senate district needs a fresh start.
After six years of a politician defined more by what she stands against than what she stands for, we deserve a representative who shares our values, a listener who will keep her door open to everyone, and a hard worker with the skills and know-how to rebuild our communities and reignite our economy post-Covid.

I know the Hudson Valley because I was born and raised in the City of Poughkeepsie. I got married and raised my family here. When my son and daughter were young, I taught Sunday school and coached soccer. Later, I joined the Boards of the Bardavon and the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum. I also served as a Trustee of Vassar College.
As your Senator, I will work with partners in the private sector as well our elected officials on the state, local, and federal level to help level the playing field and provide good jobs and good opportunities to residents of the Hudson Valley.

This year, I’m asking you to deliver the Hudson Valley the new leadership it deserves. I’m asking you to vote for me–Karen Smythe for New York State Senate.

"Let's build a stronger Hudson Valley—Together"
